Traveling Spoon

Alejandra was born and raised in a coffee-growing region of Colombia. As a child she played among the coffee trees on her grandmother’s farm, and her early years were perfumed with the aroma of coffee. When she moved to Bogota her love for coffee increased as she visited specialty coffee shops and learned from expert baristas. Now she loves to share her coffee knowledge with visitors as well as Colombians, and explain to people why coffee means so much not only to her, but to all Colombians. In her free time she…drinks more coffee! She also dedicates part of every week to do volunteer work in Spanish and English. During your coffee tour experience, let Alejandra explain what coffee in Colombia is all about. A window into the local culture, this experience is full of fun stories and interesting facts about coffee traditions in Colombia. You will learn about the history of coffee all the way up to new wave coffee brewing methods. Learn about coffee growing regions in Colombia, what makes one region different from another, and details about coffee farmers and associations. Discover how to taste these specialty coffees to fully appreciate the fragrance, aroma, flavor, and unique characteristics. Talk with coffee shop owners and managers, baristas, and other coffee experts. These passionate people often personally know the coffee farmers that grew the beans in your cup. Many of the shops here roast their own beans in-house. And all of them with share with you their love for coffee in Colombia. During your coffee tour you will visit 3-5 cafes and sample coffee at each spot. You will also get to sample informal Colombian snacks like pandebono (Colombian cheese bread), buñuelos (a sweet-salty fried cheese ball, which often accompanies coffee), mora cake (blackberry cake) and palo de queso (cheese sticks).

Bogota

The Andean city of Santa Fe de Bogota, the capital city of Colombia, is where most visitors begin their experience in the country.

Founded in 1538 by Spanish conquistadors, Bogota lies at the Western base of a mountain range that includes the shrine-topped peaks of Monserrate and Guadalupe.

The city is set at 8,500 ft/2,600 m—if you fly in from a much lower elevation, take it easy for a day or two to adjust to the altitude. Allow three days to see Bogota's sights.
