Micato Safaris

The Glowing Essence of Safari

“When you have caught the rhythm of Africa,” Isak Dinesen wrote, “you find it is the same in all her music.” Quite true, but on this event-rich but reposeful safari—beautifully accompanied by the praise of birds and the sheer fun of three-night stays in a trio of marvelously African camps—that music crescendos to symphonic heights.

We begin in Tsavo, based in the luxurious Finch Hattons Camp, named for and inspired by Denys Finch Hatton, an aristocratic Britisher bursting with love for Africa and its stupendous sceneries and free-roaming animals. Then off-the-well-trod path to Loisaba Tented Camp, in the Loisaba Conservancy, a private enclave adjacent to the Laikipia Reserve, up on the game-rich plateau of the same name, graced with views of a volcanic peak so regal that Kenya took its name as its own (Micato’s birthplace is the only country in the world to name itself for a mountain). We finish flourishingly in Sir Richard Branson’s gem, Mahali Mzuri, a spectacular camp in the fabled Maasai Mara, the lush northern part of the Serengeti-Maasai Mara ecosytem, Earth’s greatest congeries of free-ranging animals.

Micato’s Private Safari is one of our Classic Safaris but with a difference. Like our Classics, it has a fixed daily itinerary, but we will operate it as a Private Classic—without regularly scheduled departures—so you can fit it into your schedule. As on all Private Classics, your group will have its own Safari Director and vehicles, and much privacy throughout.

Nairobi

Nairobi

Nairobi is Kenya's capital and one of Africa's most modern and fastest growing major cities. The original center retains Asian influence in its older buildings with glassy modern buildings. Visit City Market with local produce and handicrafts. Other attractions are: National Museum, displaying ethnographic, paleontological and ornithological exhibits; the Arboretum, with an excellent collection of East African flora; the University, known for its unique architecture; the excellent Kenya Railway Museum; and Nairobi's landmark, the extraordinary Kenyatta Conference Center, the country's most monumental building, visible from miles outside the city. There are casinos at Safari Park Hotel and Inter-Continental, and there's Sunday-afternoon horse-racing. Visit Karen Blixen Museum, where some action of the book and film Out of Africa took place. The beautiful forested Ngong Hills is a spiritual place for the Maasai and an excellent area for hiking and enjoying views of Nairobi and the Rift Valley. Nairobi National Park is a wildlife game reserve.

Tsavo National Park

Tsavo National Park

One of East Africa’s main wildlife strongholds, the Tsavo National Park is Kenya’s largest national park, covering an area of 8,034 square miles; an area slightly bigger than Wales! This vast arid region lies approximately half-way between Nairobi and the Indian Ocean, with the Nairobi-Mombasa road and railway dividing the park, from north-west to south-east, into two main sections.

Laikipia Plateau

Laikipia Plateau

Laikipia lies on the threshold of Kenya’s Northern Frontier Province, stretching from the slopes of Mt. Kenya to the rim of the Great Rift Valley. The Laikipia Plateau is divided into a patchwork of ranches - each an enormous size - many of which in the early 1990's, turned from farming to wildlife and formed the Laikipia Wildlife Forum. Together they have created an enormous wildlife stronghold which contains some of Kenya's most endangered animals. It is one of the last refuges for the endangered Black Rhino and has the largest elephant population outside of Kenya's national parks and reserves.

Maasai Mara

Maasai Mara

The Maasai Mara National Reserve (Masai Mara) is Kenya's finest and most outstanding wildlife sanctuary where gentle rolling grassland ensures animals are never out of sight. The climate is gentle, rarely too hot and well spread rainfall year round. The sensation of the great wildebeest migration between July and October is unparalleled. The wildlife is far from being confined within the Reserve boundaries and an even larger area extends beyond the game Reserve. Centuries of close association with the wildllife has resulted in an almost symbiotic relationship where wildlife and Masai people live in peace with one another. The first sight of this park is breathtaking. There is nowhere else on earth to compare with this wildlife marvel. The combination of a gentle climate, scenic splendour and untold numbers of wildlife makes the Maasai Mara National Reserve Kenya's most popular inland destination.
